The creation of the southern alps

sense  we went went to the maire we learned about the legends and retelling them into short parts.

Once upon a time there was a man called Rāngi (sky father) he was married with Pokoharua-Te-Po the eldest son was Aoraki he had three other brothers named Rakiroa,Rakirua and Rarakiroa.

Pokoharua-te-po was heartbroken when she found out that Rāngi was in love with another woman Papatuanuku (Earth mother)and just before Rangi went to see Papatuanuku the four brothers hopped into their magic waka said a karakai and went down to earth.

When they went to earth they were more interested to find some land. The reason they were interested to find land is because land is the home of papatuanuku.

But everywhere they looked they could only see sea then a storm suddenly started the four brothers think that is it there father telling them to go back home Aoraki was the eldest he will be the one how will know the the karakai the best but he said the karakai wrong and disaster overtook them.

Instead of the waka going up it began to sink and it didn’t sink flat it sinked on a angal the horrified brothers climbed on the highest top of the waka and huddled together first their hair turned  white then they turned into stone.

Aoraki became the tallest mountain and other mountains are just mountains that join next to them. The story doesn’t not end here people made the south island a place for people to live.
